Acupuncture Magnets

Introduction to Magnetism:

Magnetism was discovered in ancient Greece; to this day, it remains a subject of constant research in science. The effects of magnetic forces, the range of their fields, and the processes in which they participate are just one segment of the work. Today, a magnet is defined as a material or object that produces magnetic forces. These forces can attract or repel other magnets and pull materials like iron, cobalt, nickel, etc. The space where magnetic forces are observable is known as the magnetic field.

Human Magnetic Field (HMF)

It is known that human body is a natural biomagnet. Two organs, the brain and heart, generate ion currents that produces a magnetic field around the body. The heart is the most powerful source of bio-magnetic energy. SQUID-based magnetometers can detect the heart’s magnetic field (HRMF) 3 feet away from the body. The strength of HRMF is 100 times greater than the brain’s magnetic field (BMF).

With new technologies, it is observed that certain changes in the human magnetic field can occur. These changes can happen due to inner or external factors. Inner modulation of the field is connected with different emotional states of the person. Different emotions are encoded in the HRMF and create different frequency (Hz) spectrums that spread throughout the body and into the external environment. Magnetic signals generated by the heart have the capacity to affect surrounding environments and individuals. Consequently, the heart’s magnetic field can be modulated by others’ magnetic fields (external factors). According to the results of the study conducted by HeartMath Institute the nervous system acts as an antenna that is tuned to and responds to the magnetic fields produced by the hearts of other individuals. They named this phenomenon “energetic communication.”

Magnetic Properties of Hemoglobin:

The other aspect of magnet influence on human health is considered on the biochemical body response, usually on the cell level of observation. In the world, the leading causes of death are strokes and heart attacks. They are often connected by high blood viscosity. The American Physical Society has published results of a study, Reducing blood viscosity with magnetic fields, in which blood exposed to a magnetic field (1.3 T) for a duration of ∼1 min can reduce viscosity by 20%-30%. After the exposure, the blood viscosity slowly, within couple of hours, returns to the original value. A magnetic field can maintain blood viscosity within the normal range; consequently, magnet technologies have potential for physical therapy and prevention.

It has been discovered that blood components responsible for oxygen transportation have magnetic properties.  American chemists Linus Pauling and Charles D. Coryell have found that red blood cells, known as hemoglobin, react to the magnetic field when they carry oxygen. The main reason for such behavior is iron (Fe). Hemoglobin contains 70% of the body's iron, which makes it more sensitive to magnetic fields than any other cells. Presence of magnetic fields can accelerate the blood flow, which is necessary in healing certain conditions. Mostly, this type of therapy can be used to alleviate painful conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fractures, chronic pain, fibromyalgia (a muscle condition that causes fatigue and muscle pain), headaches, and insomnia.

The International Journal of Biophysics has published the results of a study in which magnet therapy was used for wound healing. The conclusion was that magnet therapy accelerates the regeneration process to both diabetic and non-diabetic patients. Among others, magnet therapy can be used as a treatment and prevention for diabetic foot, a complex condition that occurs due to poor circulation which make it vulnerable to infections and occurrence of gangrene.

Magnetic Therapy

Magnetic therapy is a kind of treatment in which magnets are used with the purpose of improving overall well-being and treatment of certain conditions.

Perhaps we can say that research of magnetism and its influence on health goes in two directions. The first focus is on the human magnetic field and how its changes reflect on health. The idea behind this aspect of therapy is that certain health problems occur because the body’s magnetic fields are imbalanced, thus, returning the balance should improve the wellbeing of the person.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where pain and illness are seen as signs of bodily imbalance. This imbalance occurs when emotional, mental, and physical aspects of life are in a disharmonious relationship. The focus of acupuncture is to restore the body’s equilibrium.

Traditional acupuncturists describe acupuncture as a procedure that restores natural energy (Qi) that flows through the body and is responsible for overall health. Any disruption of this energy can cause illness and pain.

In the millennia-old practice, the Chinese have noticed that stimulation of certain points on the body trigger the body's natural healing response. These points are named acupuncture points. Each point is connected to a certain organ via meridians (acupuncture paths) and, consequently, to certain ailments. Furthermore, one ailment can have several different acupuncture points that are usually located on different areas of the body.

Today, the most acceptable explanation of acupuncture is the “neural hypothesis”. According to multiple theories, acupuncture points represent ends of sensory nerves on the body surface. Nerves itself are interconnected and create a net that spread through the entire body. Stimulating the acupuncture point, a nerve impulse is sent to the central nervous system, which processes this message and induces a checking process of the organ that corresponds to the acupuncture point. If the organ cannot respond properly, the body starts the repair process until reaching the normal organ response to nerve impulse.

The WHO recognized 28 diseases, conditions, and symptoms in which acupuncture has been “proved (through controlled trials) to be an effective treatment,” including:

  1. Morning sickness
  2. Nausea and vomiting
  3. Depression (including depressive neurosis and depression following stroke)
  4. Headache
  5. Rheumatoid arthritis

Benefits of Acupuncture Magnets:

1. Pain relief: By stimulating acupuncture points, magnets may help reduce pain and discomfort in various parts of the body.
2. Improved circulation: The magnetic properties of acupuncture magnets are thought to enhance blood flow and circulation.
3. Stress reduction: Some users report feeling more relaxed and less stressed after using acupuncture magnets.
4. Enhanced well-being: Users may experience an overall sense of well-being and balance after using acupuncture magnets.
5. Non-invasive alternative: Acupuncture magnets provide a non-invasive alternative to traditional acupuncture treatments.
